Martin Brake qualifies Karen Johnson’s mare Petal for the WOW Saddles Star Championship

As we follow the progress of some of the rider’s who have qualified for the prestigious WOW Saddles Star Championship, which will be held at the Blue Chip Winter Show Jumping Championships in April 2014, we hear about Martin Brake’s win at Kingston Maurward, qualifying Quenza des Tuilieres (Petal to her friends) for her owner Karen Johnson.

Martin has been riding Petal for about 1 year, he only meets her at the shows and works full time with show jumping being his hobby. Karen prepares the mare herself from home. Petal is very well bred, by Zandor Z , and was bred in France. “It was a very wet and windy day, but we all are so keen to qualify for the Blue Chip Championships, it didn’t matter,” says Martin. “As usual for these qualifiers, the weather doesn’t put anyone off, and they are always really competitive, with people traveling out of their areas to try to qualify. There were 16 really good horses and riders in the jump off – I had 2 horses through to the final round – Petal and Snowy. I was drawn early with Petal and did a fast clear round, which really put the pressure on the other competitors! Then I tried to beat my own time with Snowy – ended up 1 second slower to finish 3rd! Karen couldn’t watch any of the rounds as the pressure was really on – with only a few chances to qualify! We have booked our parking spot at the final already!”
